The Journey Begins

Building a Community for Data Engineers: The Journey Begins

From the beginning of my career in data engineering, I felt a distinct lack of a communal space where professionals could exchange insights and discuss the future of our field. This void inspired a personal mission: to establish a community where data engineers could thrive together. The excitement was palpable as I geared up to launch the first Snowflake community user group in Kuala Lumpur, marking the start of what I envisioned as a vibrant, engaging forum.

Overcoming Challenges on the Eve of Launch

As the event date approached, reality set in. On April 9th, tickets went live on Eventbrite, and the pressure mounted. Our theme, "Our Snowflake Journey and Beyond," was decided, but we were far from prepared. The slides I had were remnants from a previous tech talk—outdated and mismatched. To make matters more challenging, my partner was on leave for Hari Raya, leaving me to fend for myself.

The first draft of the presentation was a disaster. It was a hasty compilation that lacked cohesion and failed to align with our company’s branding standards. The feedback from my team was relentless but constructive. They pointed out the inconsistencies in design and the disjointed narrative. Despite these setbacks, there was a silver lining—the content itself was solid, providing a good foundation upon which to build.

Motivated by the critique, I delved back into the preparation with a renewed focus on unity and clarity. It was a steep learning curve, crafting slides that not only conveyed our message effectively but also resonated with our company's image and expectations. As the slides came together, something didn’t quite sit right with me—they felt overly formal, lacking the personal touch that I wanted to convey. To infuse my personality into the presentation, I decided to add memes. This not only made the slides more relatable but truly made the content feel like my own, reflecting my unique style and approach.

Honing the Art of Public Speaking

Public speaking has been part of my repertoire since my youth, yet the butterflies in my stomach were a reminder that it had been some time since my last public engagement. To prepare, I meticulously outlined the key points of my speech, ensuring each reflected my personal narrative and insights.

In the days leading up to the event, I practiced relentlessly. Whether I was commuting home or had a spare moment, I rehearsed out loud, refining my delivery and timing. Watching videos of seasoned speakers, I observed their techniques for engaging and interacting with the audience. Inspired by their strategies, I incorporated rhetorical questions into my presentation, aiming to create a dynamic and interactive experience for my audience.

For the final section of your blog, detailing the day of the event and your presentation, you can enhance the narrative by focusing on the emotional contrasts and the resolution of your efforts. Here’s a refined version:

Event Day: A Rollercoaster of Emotions

The day of the presentation dawned, buzzing with anticipation and last-minute preparations. From 10 AM to noon, my partner and I fine-tuned our delivery, refining every detail until we felt confident about the content and its delivery. However, as attendees began to fill the room and the Snowflake team made their entrance, my nerves started to spike.

Despite my outward composure—exchanging ideas and pleasantries with the Snowflake team and attendees—internally, I was battling intense stage fright. The time ticked by inexorably until it was finally my turn to step up to the podium.

Taking a deep breath, I grasped the microphone, pushed aside my anxieties, and decided to just go for it—relying on my instincts and the exhaustive preparations. To my relief and satisfaction, the presentation flowed smoother than I had dared hope. The interaction felt natural, the jokes landed well, and the rhetorical questions sparked thoughtful discussions.

As I concluded my talk and the audience responded with enthusiastic applause, a wave of pride washed over me. I had not only faced my fears but had also successfully engaged a room full of peers and professionals, sharing insights and forging connections. This experience was a powerful reminder of the rewards that come from stepping out of one's comfort zone and embracing the opportunities that arise.

Embracing "Day One"

In my journey to establish and nurture a community for data engineers, a quote I stumbled upon online resonated deeply with me: "One Day or Day One." This powerful statement serves as a constant reminder of the importance of taking action today, rather than leaving our dreams for 'one day' in the future.

As I reflect on the nervous excitement of the Snowflake user group event and my triumph over stage fright, I see it as my own "Day One." It wasn't just about giving a presentation; it was about laying the foundational stone for a thriving community and stepping closer to my long-term goals.

I am hopeful and determined that this is just the beginning. Each step I take, no matter how daunting, is a step toward reaching those goals. With each "Day One," I grow, we grow as a community, and the future of data engineering becomes a little brighter.
