My First Tutoring Experience

It's been a while since I last connected with you all through my blog. I've been itching to share my foray into tutoring, which almost made it to the blogosphere last week, but alas, time had other plans.

How it all began

Last month, over a casual dinner, my sister began telling me about a friend of hers, a lawyer who surprisingly tutors math to kids. Apparently, she earns around RM80 per hour, which piqued my interest, but not as much as what came next. My sister casually mentioned that this friend had been asked if she knew anyone who could teach coding. Before I knew it, my sister was playfully berating me, suggesting I should use my skills to teach coding, rather than just indulging in my usual gaming and gym routines. With a mixture of amusement and inspiration, I decided, "Why not?" and set up a profile on a tutoring website. Once done, I promptly forgot about it amidst my daily activities.

The Unexpected Opportunity

Fast forward to April 16th, a notification broke my routine - a text from a student at TARUC. This student was eager to delve deeper into SQL to prepare for their upcoming midterm exams. Admittedly, teaching someone to ace exams wasn’t exactly what I had in mind—I've always envisioned tutoring as a way to foster a genuine love for learning rather than just exam prep. Nevertheless, the idea of helping someone understand something new was too good to pass up. So, I decided to give it a shot.

The tutoring session stretched out to around two hours, during which I could see the gears turning and the spark of understanding light up my student's eyes. It reminded me of the times I helped my best friend grapple with new concepts. This prior experience unexpectedly prepped me for the role of a tutor, and it seemed to pay off. Curious about how I performed, I asked my student for some honest feedback. To my delight, he complimented my clarity in explanation—a real boost to my confidence!

Extra Pocket Money

With the extra cash in my pocket, I decided to treat my wife to a lavish lunch. We indulged in some good cafe food, humorously managing to spend nearly all of my tutoring earnings! 😄 It was totally worth it, though, for such a delightful day.

Looking Ahead

This experience has definitely sparked a new interest in me, and I'm open to embracing more tutoring sessions when time allows. The blend of earning while helping others is quite fulfilling, and I’m excited to see where this journey will take me.
